EVENT 14th Jun 2019

Big Lakes Challenge: 14 - 16 June 2019

Bike 4 Cancer - About Us

Set up by a team of cycling enthusiasts, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Bike 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer.

We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of exercise (e.g. cycling) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.

Big Lakes Challenge 2019

It’s the Big Lakes Challenge! A unique three day event which includes The Big Challenge on Day 2 where you will canoe, cycle and trek through the staggering beauty of Keswick. The Big Lakes Challenge is not a race and is open to all abilities.

Date

  • Friday 14 June - Sunday 16 June 2019

The Itinerary

Day 1
You will travel to Keswick and the hotel, located close to Derwentwater. You will have the opportunity to have your bike fitted ahead of your challenge once you arrive. This will then be followed by a group welcome dinner along with event briefing.

Day 2
After you have eaten a hearty breakfast if you didn't get a chance for your bike to be fitted then there will be another opportunity to do so and also to get your clothing prepared.

  • Stage 1: Canoe - Approx. 3 miles/ 1.5 hours - Your challenge will start at the canoe centre and you will be put into pairs in their open Canadian canoes. It will be a team effort to get round St Herbert’s island and then back to the canoe centre.

  • Stage 2: Bike - Approx. 8 miles - Upon completing the canoe element of the challenge you will have a short moment to get changed into your cycling gear and on to collect your bike. Then you will cycle uphill from Lodore Falls to Gatesgarth via the infamous Honister Pass. You will get a chance to stop and admire the stunning scenery if you so wish.

  • Stage 3:Trek - Approx. 3.5 hours and 7 miles - You will now have a chance to regroup and enjoy a packed lunch before changing into your trekking gear. You will then begin the 650m ascent up the rough trail to Haystacks. Once at the summit you’ll have a very short rest to admire the scenery - and just enough time to secure that all important selfie!

  • Stage 4:Bike - Approx. 13 miles - Now it's the final push on your bike as you cycle up Newlands Pass back and around Derwentwater back to the start point.

That's it your challenge is complete and you will celebrate your incredible achievement with your fellow triathletes over a celebration meal in the evening.

Day 3

Once you've finished your breakfast it will time to say goodbye and to make your journey home.
