Simon Gwynne cycles to Paris

Bike 4 Cancer - About Us

Set up by a team of cycling enthusiasts, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Bike 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer.

We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of exercise (e.g. cycling) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.

On the 23rd of April 2014, Simon Gwynne will start an epic four day cycle challenge in aid of Bike 4 Cancer. Simon will cycle nearly 300 miles in just four days!

Starting in London, Simon will cycle to Dover on the first day (75 miles) before catching ferry to France. Once on French soil, Simon will cycle to Abbeville on day two (80 miles). Day three will see Simon ride to Beavais, a 60 mile trek through hilly forested areas. Simon will ride the final 60 miles into Paris on the fourth and final day.

Commenting on his Challenge, Simon said:

Having never been a major long distance cyclist (Hereford Leisure Centre to Leisure Pool or 30 minutes out around Brilley doesn't really count - as Tam will attest!!), this is going to be quite a challenge for me.

The last couple of years have really shown to me the impact cancer has on families and people. A good friend of mine was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and this drastically changed his life, appearance and affected the people closest to him.

My father has had skin cancer treatment this year - when you realise that 40% of people are affected, this hit home even more. And a friend and someone I have known for years through Ross Rugby Club unfortunately died just over a week ago after a long battle with cancer. Her attitude and zest for life were an inspiration to all that knew her.

I have set myself a fundraising target of £1,500 to help combat cancer and provide support to other people out there. I plan to do a variety of events over the next 4 months and if you have any ideas or can support me in any way I would really appreciate it." Simon
