Mark Brown's London to Brighton

Bike 4 Cancer - About Us

Set up by a team of cycling enthusiasts, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Bike 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer.

We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of exercise (e.g. cycling) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.

On Sunday the 7th of September 2014, Mark Brown will be joining 5,000 other cyclists for the infamous London to Brighton bike race.

Starting on Clapham Common, the route travels through Mitcham, Carshalton, Chipstead, Banstead and Haywards Heath before finishing in front of Brighton Pier.

Mark will have to tackle some very steep hills along the 58 mile route including Ditchling Beacon - the highest point in the county of East Sussex at 814 feet above sea level!

Commenting on his ride, Mark said:

"Sadly for these modern times, you still do not have to look far to find someone affected by cancer. It affects young an old alike, and despite survival rates improving massively over recent years, it is still a massive challenge to overcome for those individuals. Organisations like Bike 4 Cancer make a critical difference to people's lives, helping families to cope during difficult times.

Last year was my first year taking part in the London to Brighton charity ride. I trained long and hard for the event and was very pleased that I completed the event in around 5 hours. This year, despite the fantastic weather we have been having, I've taken a more relaxed approach to training - I've only just started a few weeks ago, and the event is now next weekend!

I'm planning to take my old classic 1960's bike out for another year - it's not quite a penny farthing, but older than I am! - and hoping it will still manage the distance. If you would like to help me raise much needed funds for Bike 4 Cancer and help people at their time of need, please use the area below to make a contribution.

Thanks in advance for supporting me on this ride. Thanks!"
