Set up by a team of cycling enthusiasts, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Bike 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer.
We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of exercise (e.g. cycling) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.
Starting on Clapham Common, the route travels through Mitcham, Carshalton, Chipstead, Banstead and Haywards Heath before finishing in front of Brighton Pier.
Sam will have to tackle the fearsome Ditchling Beacon at the end of the 58 mile route - the highest point in East Sussex at 814 feet above sea level!
Commenting on her challenge, Sam said:
"Sunsets……not everyone gets to see as many of these as they should!
Unfortunately, cancer has wormed its way into my family. Adrenal Corticol Carcinoma to be precise, ACC affects 1-2 people per million, per year, making it a very rare form of cancer. ACC occurs in the outer part of the adrenal gland. In adults, ACC most commonly occurs in the 4th or 5th decades of life. However, ACC can also affect children, where the disease may be less aggressive.
I have supported various charities over the years, however I have not taken part in an event myself. So I have chosen this event, cycling from London to Brighton, which is around the 55 mile mark, to raise some money in the hope that it helps to fight the terrible disease, provide treatment and support to those who are suffering/recovering and also to the families of those affected.
