Groomie tackles Ironman Wales!

STOP PRESS...

Ironman Wales is to be shown on Channel 4 THIS Sunday, 28th September at 7.05pm (or Channel4+1 at 8.05pm)

Bike 4 Cancer - About Us

Set up by a team of cycling enthusiasts, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Bike 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer. We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of exercise (e.g. cycling) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.

On Sunday the 14th of September 2014, Richard Groome will be taking part in this year's 'Ironman Wales'!

Rich, a long-time supporter of Bike 4 Cancer and Sail 4 Cancer, is attempting to complete one of the world's toughest Ironman races.

Rich has completed a number of cycling challenges, but is not built for running and has little experience in open water swimming.

Some have questioned the wisdom therefore of choosing to swim 2.5 miles, ride 112 miles and then complete a marathon by running 26.2 miles!

However Rich is doing this in memory of a good friend, Caroline, who lost her battle with cancer in 2008.

Caroline was an active 28 year old when she was diagnosed with cancer and the spirit, energy and positivity she showed is all the fuel Rich will need to complete the Ironman course.

After completing the challenge, Rich said:

RG run
Thanks again to those who sponsored me. All the encouragement helped and I am happy to report that I am still in one piece. The swim was horrendous with 4ft waves (many people were dragged out by the RNLI and others were physically seasick from the motion). I loved the bike despite all the hills (2700m for fellow cyclists) and then did my best to hold it together for the run. Watching others throwing up and unable to carry on certainly helped as did hearing Build Me Up Buttercup - the song my friend Caroline chose to close her funeral after she lost her fight with cancer.

I finished in 14hrs 3mins with timings below:

2.4 mile 1hr 33mins
112 mile bike 6hrs 52mins
26.2mile run 5hrs 4mins
Position 1005 (2100 entrants)

The whole event was pretty emotional and saw me dig much deeper than anything else I have done to date.

Thanks again.

Rich
