On Thursday 25th September, a group of twelve battle hardened cyclists will set off on a very special mission.
They intend to cycle from St Albans in Hertforshire to the centre of Paris in France.
In just two and a half days, the Dirty Dozen as they have become known, will cycle 350 Km.
Their objective is to raise £12,000 for two charities close to their hearts; Brainwave and Bike 4 Cancer.
Gentlemen, we salute you!
The UN Wheelers was originally formed as the St Albans branch of the South Wales Wheelers and was founded one drunken afternoon at the St Albans beer festival by Darren, Phil and Rich who found a novel hangover cure by getting up early and cycling the streets of Hertfordshire.
The idea developed to combine the love the biking and beer into a challenging 3 day event that raises loads of money for charity. As word of challenge spread more and more like minded individuals were keen to be involved and the original three have been joined by Tim, Dave, Steve, Nick, Adrian, Jez, Pete and Rich L.
This group represents (or has tenuous links) to many countries beyond Wales such as France, Belgium, Switzerland, Australia and England - hence the South Wales Wheelers was expanded to reflect this and is now known as the UN Wheelers.
This group is now a Dirty Dozen of international mercenarys whose mission is to cycle from St Albans to Paris whilst raising money for two fantastic charities. The lads plan to set off from St Albans on Thursday 25th September, cycle through London and finish up in Newhaven (164km). On the Friday they will catch the ferry to Dieppe, cycle 100 km to Beauvais before the final stretch to Eiffel Tower on Saturday (a leisurely 80 km).
Brainwave helps children with disabilities and additional needs to achieve greater independence. Brainwave aims to improve mobility, communication skills and learning potential, through a range of educational and physical therapies. The children Brainwave work with have a range of conditions including autism, brain injuries such as cerebral palsy and genetic conditions such as Down's Syndrome.
Set up by a team of cycling enthusiasts, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Bike 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer. We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of exercise (e.g. cycling) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.
