Bike vs Boat 2015: Sat 29 Aug 2015
400 Kms in under 24 hours!
Set up by a team of cycling enthusiasts, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Bike 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer. We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of exercise (e.g. cycling) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.
On Saturday the 29th of August 2015, a select group of elite cyclists, led by long time Bike 4 Cancer supporter Richard Groome, will embark on a bike race like no other!
The Challenge!
They will be cycling from Tower Bridge in Central London to Brighton Marina along the longest possible coastal route in a bid to beat two Sunsail F40 racing yachts who will start and finish in the same place. The two yachts though will be sailing the shortest possible route, wind/tide permitting.
Each member of the cycling team will have to cover 400 Kms (275 land miles) to get to the Brighton Pier. What's more they will have to climb 4,254 metres over the course distance!
By comparison, the sailing team, crewed by supporters from sister charity Sail 4 Cancer, will have to cover about 180 nautical miles and they are expected to cross the finish line in about 22 hours.
Who can enter?
The challenge is open to solos, pairs (who both have to do the whole distance) or teams of 6 (like the yachts) who can ride as a relay team. Each team needs to have their own support vehicle in close contact at all times.
